Remote sensing is the science of collecting and analyzing information about the Earth from a distance, using satellite imagery, aerial photos, drones and LiDAR. Remote sensing specialists turn that imagery into maps of land cover, crop health, wildfire burn scars, flood extent, urban growth and more.
Most remote sensing training happens inside geography, GIS or environmental science programs, as a concentration, a graduate certificate or a set of courses. It is closely tied to GIS: remote sensing produces the data, and GIS analyzes and maps it. This guide covers campus programs, fully online certificates, what you will learn and the career outlook. See also our GIS and geography degrees guide.
What You Learn in Remote Sensing
- Image interpretation and processing: correcting, enhancing and classifying satellite and aerial imagery.
- Multispectral and hyperspectral analysis: using light beyond what the eye sees to map vegetation, water and minerals.
- LiDAR and elevation data: building 3D terrain and canopy models.
- Drones (UAS): planning flights and processing drone imagery.
- Machine learning and automation: Python, Google Earth Engine and AI methods for large image datasets.
- Applications: land cover change, agriculture, forestry, disasters, climate and urban growth.

Boston University
BU offers one of the few degrees named for the field: a 32-credit M.S. in Remote Sensing and Geospatial Sciences designed to be finished in one year, in person only. Courses include Advanced Topics in Remote Sensing, Digital Image Processing in Remote Sensing and Remote Sensing of Vegetation. The GRE is optional.
Indiana University Bloomington
IU’s M.S. in Geography includes a Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing track (30 credits, with a thesis or two research papers). IU also offers a 30-credit Master of Geographic Information Science whose core includes Environmental Remote Sensing. The GRE is optional, and the deadline is December 1.
University of Northern Iowa
UNI’s M.A. in Geography offers a GIScience and Remote Sensing concentration (33 credits with a thesis or 30 without), with no GRE. Its labs include the GeoTREE Center, a Low Altitude Remote Sensing drone lab and hyperspectral imaging. UNI says the non-thesis track will be offered fully online beginning August 2026, so confirm availability with the department.
University of North Texas
UNT’s 36-credit M.S. in Geography lets students focus their research on GIS and remote sensing, including LiDAR for disaster and environmental assessment. It is a research theme rather than a formal concentration.
South Dakota State University
SDSU’s Geospatial Sciences Center of Excellence is a research partnership with the USGS EROS Center, home of the Landsat satellite archive. It supports a Ph.D. in Geospatial Science and Engineering with a remote sensing specialization, plus geography and GIS graduate programs.
Online Remote Sensing Certificates and Degrees
Remote sensing works well online because the core skills are software-based. These programs are fully online:
| School | Program | Credits | Tuition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Penn State World Campus | Graduate Certificate in Remote Sensing and Earth Observation | 12 | $1,048 per credit (2026–27) |
| UConn | Remote Sensing and Geospatial Data Analytics Graduate Certificate | 12 | $925 per credit (2026–27) |
| Northeastern University | Remote Sensing Graduate Certificate | 12 | About $15,100 total (2026–27 estimate) |
| University of Arizona | M.S. in Geographic Information Systems Technology (includes Remote Sensing Science) | 30 | $850 per credit |
| Oregon State Ecampus | M.S. in Geography and Geospatial Science; GIScience certificates | 45 quarter (M.S.) | $609 per credit |
| University of Oklahoma | M.S. Geospatial Technologies (remote sensing and drone courses) | 33 | $1,015 per credit |
- Penn State: courses include Topographic Mapping with Lidar, Remote Sensing Image Analysis and Applications, and Unmanned Aerial Systems; the Bulletin expects prior GIS experience. Penn State’s 33-credit online MGIS accepts these as electives, with no GRE.
- UConn: asynchronous, 12 to 18 months, with UAS and LiDAR electives; GIS background helpful but not required.
- Northeastern: six 2-credit courses including Machine Learning for Image Data and Automated Feature Extraction (catalog).
- Other online GIS programs with remote sensing coursework include Northwest Missouri State and CU Denver. Compare them all in our online geography and GIS degree guide.
Remote Sensing Careers and Salary
| Occupation | Median Pay | Outlook | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote sensing scientists and technologists | $122,570 | Slower than average | O*NET (2025 BLS wage data) |
| Remote sensing technicians | $62,280 | Average | O*NET (2025 BLS wage data) |
| Cartographers and photogrammetrists | $81,390 (May 2025) | 7% growth, 2025–35 | BLS OOH |
| Surveying and mapping technicians | $54,240 (May 2025) | 6% growth, 2025–35 | BLS OOH |
Note: O*NET’s remote sensing wages come from broad BLS “all other” science categories, not remote sensing jobs alone, so treat them as estimates. Employers include federal agencies (USGS, NASA, NOAA, defense and intelligence), environmental and engineering consultancies, agriculture and forestry companies, satellite imagery firms and utilities.
Bottom Line
If you want a campus degree built around remote sensing, Boston University’s one-year M.S. is the most focused option, while IU and Northern Iowa offer remote sensing within a geography master’s with no GRE requirement. Working professionals can add remote sensing skills online through 12-credit graduate certificates from Penn State, UConn or Northeastern. Pair imagery skills with GIS, Python and field validation for the strongest job prospects. Interested in landforms? See our geomorphology degrees guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is remote sensing in geography?
Remote sensing is the collection and analysis of data about the Earth’s surface from satellites, aircraft and drones. Geographers use it to map land cover, track environmental change and respond to disasters.
Can you get a remote sensing degree online?
Yes. Fully online options include graduate certificates from Penn State, UConn and Northeastern, and online GIS master’s degrees with remote sensing courses from Arizona, Oregon State and Oklahoma.
What is the difference between GIS and remote sensing?
Remote sensing collects and processes imagery of the Earth. GIS stores, analyzes and maps spatial data, including data produced by remote sensing. Most jobs use both.
How much do remote sensing specialists make?
O*NET reports a median of $122,570 for remote sensing scientists and technologists and $62,280 for remote sensing technicians, based on 2025 BLS wage data for broader occupation groups.
Do I need a master’s degree for remote sensing jobs?
Technician and analyst roles often require a bachelor’s degree plus remote sensing and GIS skills. Scientist and research roles usually call for a master’s or Ph.D.
