About Us

An independent guide to geography, GIS and planning degrees. Here is who we are, how we research programs and how we rank them.

GeographyDegrees.org is an independent guide to college programs in geography, GIS, remote sensing, planning and related fields. We help prospective students compare accredited programs by state, by specialization and by online availability, so they can find a degree that fits their goals, budget and schedule.

What We Cover

  • State guides list geography programs at colleges and universities in each state, from community college certificates to doctoral degrees.
  • Specialization guides cover GIScience, remote sensing, geospatial technology, climatology, geomorphology, urban planning and environmental planning.
  • Online program profiles describe fully online geography degrees in detail, including credits, format, tuition and admission requirements.
  • Career resources explain what geography graduates do and how GIS skills connect to jobs.

Who It’s For

  • High school and transfer students choosing a geography major
  • Working adults looking for an online bachelor’s or degree-completion option
  • GIS, planning and environmental professionals considering a master’s or certificate
  • Teachers looking for graduate geography credit

Our Editorial Team

The GeographyDegrees.org Editorial Team researches, writes and reviews every guide on the site. We are not affiliated with, and are not an official partner of, any school we list.

Pages show a “Reviewed” date at the top once the team has re-checked them against current school sources. Pages without a review date are scheduled for an update.

How We Research Programs

We build each profile from primary sources whenever possible:

  • School sources: official program pages, academic catalogs and published tuition schedules
  • Federal data: the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
  • Accreditation records: institutional accreditation from agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)

When we estimate a total cost, we show the per-credit rate and the academic year it comes from, so you can recalculate it when rates change. When a school does not publish a detail, such as a minimum GPA, we say so rather than guess.

How We Rank Programs

Choosing a program is a personal decision, and the best fit for one student may not suit another. Our rankings are a starting point for comparison, not a final verdict.

Which Programs We Include

We start with geography and related programs reported in IPEDS. We exclude programs that:

  • have no current enrollment records in IPEDS
  • have been discontinued or are scheduled to close
  • are offered by schools without recognized institutional accreditation

Ranking Factors

  • Accreditation: the school holds institutional accreditation from a recognized agency. Geography itself has no separate programmatic accreditor, so institutional accreditation is the standard we check.
  • Curriculum breadth: specialization options such as physical geography, human geography, GIS, environmental studies, urban and regional planning, and climate studies.
  • Technical training: GIS, remote sensing, cartography and spatial analysis coursework, plus access to lab software.
  • Experiential learning: fieldwork, internships, research projects and study abroad.
  • Affordability: published tuition, and whether online students pay a flat rate regardless of residency.
  • Flexibility: online and hybrid options, part-time study and multiple start terms.
  • Student support: class size, advising and mentoring.

Rankings are snapshots of programs at the time we collect data, and programs change. We review our methodology each year.

How We Make Money

GeographyDegrees.org is free to use. Some pages include school-matching listings from our lead generation partner. If you click one of these listings or submit a request for information, we may earn a fee on a cost-per-click or cost-per-lead basis. When you submit a request, the details you enter go to that school or its representative so they can contact you about their programs.

Schools do not pay for placement on GeographyDegrees.org. Our program profiles, state guides and the facts we report about each program come from the research process described above.

Corrections and Contact

Program details such as tuition, credits and admission requirements change often. Always confirm them with the school before you apply. If you spot an error, or you represent a school and want to update program information, please use our contact form. We review every correction request against the school’s official sources.
