New Hampshire has 4 schools with verified geography or geographic information systems (GIS) credentials: the University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College, Plymouth State University, and Antioch University New England. Two of them offer a geography bachelor’s degree. The University of New Hampshire also offers a professional master’s degree in geospatial science. The state has no geography Ph.D. and no community college GIS program.

Community Colleges
None of New Hampshire’s seven community colleges lists a geography degree, a GIS certificate, or a surveying program in its current catalog. White Mountains Community College teaches two GIS courses within its Environmental Science associate degree, and NHTI offers single courses in GIS and surveying. We found no geography-specific transfer pathway into the state universities.
Related Urban Planning Programs
The University of New Hampshire’s 128-credit B.S. in Community and Environmental Planning requires one GIS course, an internship, and a capstone. It is a planning degree, not a GIS degree. See our urban planning guide.
Online Geography and GIS Programs in New Hampshire
An online course is not the same as an online degree. The programs below have an official statement that the full credential can be completed online. The next list covers programs that only offer some coursework online.
Verified fully online options
- Antioch University New England: the 9-credit Certificate in Applied Spatial Analysis in GIS can be completed entirely online. Courses are synchronous and, in some cases, asynchronous.
- Southern New Hampshire University: the B.S. in Geosciences is offered online. It is a geoscience degree, not a geography or GIS degree. Its required courses include mapping and geostatistics, and GIS, remote sensing, and spatial analysis are available as electives. For its online programs, see our Southern New Hampshire University Online B.S. in Geosciences profile.
Online coursework, but not a verified fully online program
- University of New Hampshire Graduate Certificate in Geospatial Science: the university describes a mix of online and traditional courses.
- University of New Hampshire M.S. in Geospatial Science: offered in Durham. Two required courses are online only.
No New Hampshire school describes a geography degree as fully online. For programs based in other states, see online geography schools.
New Hampshire School Summaries
University of New Hampshire
The University of New Hampshire’s B.A. in Geography requires ten geography courses (40 credits). Students take an introductory course, Geography of the Natural Environment, Human Geography, and Making Maps: GIS Fundamentals, followed by five electives and a writing-intensive capstone course. A foreign language is required. An internship is optional. Students can focus on geospatial methods by taking three advanced methods courses.
The M.S. in Geospatial Science is a professional, non-thesis degree of 30–32 credits in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment. Core courses cover applied GIS, web mapping, geospatial programming, drone remote sensing, satellite remote sensing, and surveying and field methods, and the degree ends in a two-credit professional preparation course. Applicants submit two letters and a personal statement. The program pages do not publish a GPA minimum or a GRE policy. They advertise scholarships that reduce program course costs by up to 20% for students starting in 2026–27, but no assistantships.
The 16-credit Graduate Certificate in Geospatial Science is five courses: Elements of Geospatial Science, a GIS course, a data analysis course, and two electives.

Dartmouth College
Dartmouth’s Geography major requires at least ten courses: one introductory course, one methods course, three courses from different themes, one upper-division course, three additional geography courses, and a culminating experience. The four themes are physical geography, cultural and social geography, nature and society, and GIS and spatial analysis. An honors thesis is optional.
Dartmouth has no graduate degree in geography and no GIS certificate. Geography faculty take part in an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in ecology, evolution, environment and society.

Plymouth State University
Plymouth State offers a 16-credit GIS Certificate. Students take GIS I and GIS II, then eight credits chosen from Remote Sensing and Digital Image Processing, Geospatial Technology Applications, GIS Programming, and a GIS internship. Geography is otherwise offered as a minor, and no geography bachelor’s degree is in the 2026–27 catalog.

Antioch University New England
Antioch’s graduate Certificate in Applied Spatial Analysis in GIS is three courses for 9 credits: an introductory GIS course, an advanced course, and an applied course in which students complete a GIS project with a partner organization. It takes about 10 months and requires a bachelor’s degree. The credits can count toward Antioch’s M.S. in Environmental Studies.

Schools not included
- Keene State College: no geography major or GIS certificate is in the 2026–27 catalog. A geography minor remains. Its Environmental Studies and Sustainability Studies degrees are on administrative hold and closed to new students.
- Plymouth State University: no geography or environmental planning bachelor’s degree is in the current catalog.
- Southern New Hampshire University: the online B.S. in Geosciences is not a geography or GIS degree, and the current catalog lists no geospatial concentration.
- GIS courses only: Colby-Sawyer College and Franklin Pierce University teach GIS within environmental degrees.
- No geography or GIS credential: Saint Anselm College, New England College, Rivier University, and the seven community colleges.
Tuition Comparison
Estimated tuition is our arithmetic from each published rate and the stated basis. Each figure is labeled “per year” or “total.” None includes fees, housing, books, or other costs.

Rates are 2026–27 unless the row notes otherwise.
Why some rates do not compare directly
- The University of New Hampshire charges its geospatial science programs a special per-credit rate, with only a small out-of-state difference. Its standard graduate tuition is a different schedule.
- Students from other New England states may qualify for a regional rate at the University of New Hampshire and Plymouth State.
- Plymouth State’s certificate estimate uses the part-time per-credit rate. Full-time students who add the certificate to a degree pay the annual rate instead.
- Dartmouth and Antioch charge one rate regardless of residency.
How to Choose a Geography or GIS Program in New Hampshire
Broad geography or technical GIS
The University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth both offer broad geography majors that include GIS. For a technical focus, the University of New Hampshire’s M.S. and graduate certificate in geospatial science concentrate on GIS, programming, remote sensing, and field methods. Read more about GIScience degrees and geospatial technology.
Certificate, bachelor’s, or graduate degree
Certificates range from 9 credits at Antioch to 16 credits at Plymouth State and the University of New Hampshire. The only master’s degree in the field is the University of New Hampshire’s M.S. in Geospatial Science. Compare bachelor’s and master’s programs nationally.
Online or campus
Antioch’s GIS certificate is the only geography or GIS credential in the state that can be completed fully online. The University of New Hampshire’s graduate programs mix online and campus courses.
Research or professional master’s
The University of New Hampshire’s M.S. is a professional degree without a thesis. Students who want a research master’s or a Ph.D. in geography will need to look outside the state. Students considering a Ph.D. should check research preparation and admissions requirements. A thesis can help demonstrate research experience.
Funding
The University of New Hampshire advertises scholarships of up to 20% of program course costs for M.S. students starting in 2026–27, but it does not advertise assistantships for the program. Antioch does not advertise funding for its certificate.
Students open to nearby states can also compare programs in Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts, or browse all state guides.
