Rhode Island has 3 schools with verified geography or geographic information systems (GIS) credentials: 2 public four-year institutions and the state’s community college. No Rhode Island school offers a bachelor’s degree or doctorate in geography or GIS. Instead, the state’s options are certificates: an undergraduate GIS certificate at Rhode Island College, a GIS certificate at the Community College of Rhode Island, and two graduate GIS certificates at the University of Rhode Island, which also offers a master’s degree with a remote sensing and spatial analysis specialization. URI’s GIS and Geospatial Technologies Graduate Certificate is the only fully online option; no online geography degree was verified.

Related Urban Planning Programs
This planning degree requires GIS coursework but is not a geography or GIS degree.
- Community College of Rhode Island: Associate in Arts (A.A.) in Community Planning, new for 2026–27. The 62-credit degree trains planning technicians and requires the same three ArcGIS courses (12 credits) as CCRI’s GIS certificate, plus Introduction to Geography. It is based at the Knight Campus and requires at least one online course.
URI’s graduate certificates in community planning and Roger Williams University’s Urban and Regional Planning Graduate Certificate do not list a required GIS course. See our urban planning guide.
Online Geography and GIS Programs in Rhode Island
An online course is not the same as an online degree. The program below has an official statement that the full credential can be completed online. The next list covers programs with online courses but no verified fully online route.
Verified fully online options
- University of Rhode Island Graduate Certificate in GIS and Geospatial Technologies: URI describes the 12-credit certificate as fully online, with asynchronous 7-week courses that can be finished in as little as two semesters. It is a graduate certificate, not a degree. URI’s fully online Master of Environmental Management lets students choose this certificate as one of two focus areas, but that master’s degree is not a GIS degree.
Online coursework, but not a verified fully online program
- University of Rhode Island Graduate Certificate in GIS and Remote Sensing: URI says the core courses are online and asynchronous or in person with a remote attendance option at the instructor’s discretion, and some electives may have no remote option.
- Community College of Rhode Island GIS Certificate: the catalog says it may be completed at the Knight (Warwick) Campus. It is not listed as fully online.
- Rhode Island College GIS Certificate of Undergraduate Study: no online delivery is stated, and the certificate includes an internship.
For programs based in other states, see online geography schools.
Rhode Island School Summaries
University of Rhode Island
URI’s GIS programs are run by the Department of Natural Resources Science in the College of Environment and Life Sciences. The online Graduate Certificate in GIS and Geospatial Technologies is 12 credits: Web-Based Mapping, Geospatial Data Acquisition and Management, Techniques in Geospatial Analysis, and Advanced Topics in Geospatial Data Visualization. Courses are taught by GIS professionals from URI’s Environmental Data Center and use ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro. Applicants need a bachelor’s degree, two letters of recommendation, a resume, and a statement of purpose; the catalog lists a 3.0 GPA, and the GRE is not required.
The Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing requires Fundamentals of GIS, Concepts of GIS and Remote Sensing in Environmental Science, Advanced GIS Analysis of Environmental Data, and a remote sensing course, plus one elective such as GIS in Python, Spatial Data Analysis, or GIS Applications in Coastal and Marine Management. The department says the program requires at least 16 credits; the 2026–27 catalog lists 15. URI undergraduates can begin the certificate before graduating and double-count up to 12 credits, and the certificate can count toward the M.E.S.M.
The 36-credit Master of Environmental Science and Management (M.E.S.M.) is a professional, non-research degree with eight specializations. The Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis specialization requires 12 to 16 natural science credits, including at least 9 in remote sensing and spatial analysis. Every student completes graduate seminars and a culminating internship, independent project, or environmental leadership course. URI undergraduates in related majors can apply through an accelerated bachelor’s-to-M.E.S.M. route.

Rhode Island College
Rhode Island College’s geography courses are offered through its Department of Political Science. The Geographic Information Systems Certificate of Undergraduate Study (C.U.S.) is 16 to 18 credits: Mapping Our Changing World, Geographic Information Systems I and II, and a 4- to 6-credit Internship in Geography. Students must keep a 2.0 GPA in the program. The college describes the certificate as preparing students to link location data with descriptive, analytic, or predictive information about people, environments, and places.
Rhode Island College has no geography major; geography is offered as a 19-credit minor.

Community College of Rhode Island
CCRI’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Certificate is 18 to 19 credits. Students take three ArcGIS courses (Introduction to ArcGIS; Data Management and Spatial Analysis; and Field Data Collection and Web Applications), Introduction to Geography, and one elective from fields such as emergency management, geology, oceanography, data analytics, and state and local government. The certificate is designed for students with no prior GIS experience and can be completed in one year starting in the fall. It is offered at the Knight Campus in Warwick.
CCRI’s new A.A. in Community Planning uses the same three ArcGIS courses and is listed under related urban planning programs.

All URI rates are for 2026–27.
Why some rates do not compare directly
- URI’s online GIS certificate is billed at a separate accelerated online rate that does not depend on residency. Its other GIS programs use standard graduate rates.
- Certificate estimates use per-credit part-time rates. Students who take a certificate alongside a full-time degree pay flat full-time tuition instead, such as $5,230.50 per semester for in-state undergraduates at Rhode Island College.
- Regional and Northeast Neighbors rates are discounts for residents of nearby states. Rhode Island College’s Northeast Neighbors rate covers Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, New Jersey, and Pike County, Pennsylvania.
- CCRI’s catalog says tuition and fees are subject to change by the state, so confirm spring rates with the bursar.
How to Choose a Geography or GIS Program in Rhode Island
Certificate level
CCRI’s certificate starts from no GIS experience and focuses on ArcGIS skills. Rhode Island College’s certificate adds an internship and can be paired with a bachelor’s degree in another field. URI’s two graduate certificates require a bachelor’s degree. Read more about GIScience degrees and geospatial technology.
Bachelor’s or master’s degree
Rhode Island has no geography or GIS bachelor’s degree, so students who want a geography major will need to look out of state; compare bachelor’s programs. At the graduate level, URI’s M.E.S.M. with the Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis specialization is the closest in-state option. For a master’s named for geography or GIS, see master’s programs.
Online or campus
The only verified fully online option is URI’s 12-credit GIS and Geospatial Technologies certificate. URI’s GIS and Remote Sensing certificate has online and remote-attendance core courses, but not every elective is offered remotely. CCRI and Rhode Island College programs are campus-based. For more choices, see online geography schools.
Students open to nearby states can also compare programs in Massachusetts and Connecticut, or browse all state guides.
